Space and place have always been heavily featured in LY’s art. She depicts the world through her Superflat style that shows monochrome land- & cityscapes featuring her signature character LUV. While initially painting the streets of her home town Tokyo her subject matter has expanded over the years to reveal LUV in many imagined places. LUV gets introduced to all sorts of environments within the work but it is also part of LY’s practice to showcase the art itself in a myriad of surroundings. Through the use of murals her art has been incorporated into public spaces all over the world. For the last two years the effect of COVID-19 has not only influenced the physical spaces but also effected the places imagined in her work. More than ever the work reflects a new reality of today’s modern life and the isolation that we experience in a locked down world.
The works created over the course of the pandemic explore this new reality by placing LUV in isolation. Our latest collaboration with LY features works that were created specifically for us. LUV’s position of sitting all curled up conveys a mood that we can all relate to while facing COVID. During the pandemic the artist started painting a series of “Confused LUV”. Placing the character in townscapes with no others around. Simultaneously the artist expresses a positive attitude for the future, waiting for the time where you can be together again in those now empty places. LUV here is patient and looking at the future. Stuck in place but always looking forward LUV is, much like we are and the title of the editions suggests, confused.
