One of my favourite paintings I saw in person last year

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a British artist and writer known for her enigmatic portraits of fictitious people. Her inspiration comes from found images and from her own imagination. She often completes a canvas in a single day which is amazing considering how rich the textures are.
I had the chance to see her painting, Wren (pictured below), at Phillips (before it sold for double the high estimate) and it was one of the most memorable interactions with a piece in awhile. The mystery surrounding the subjects and the moody backdrop had me staring every time I would pass it on my shifts. Her paintings really pull you in and make you wonder about the inner life of the subject but also of the artist’s.
I am so excited to see what her next steps will be!
