Adriana Oliver currently has a new solo show in Tokyo. From the works she created for the show there is a clear personal favourite “Our Day”, which became the natural choice for a new edition. The work is different, the round shape will be a first for her prints. Besides the shape, the work captures new intentions from the artist. Where Oliver’s work is usually more static portraits, “Our Day” has a sense of dynamism and shows a depth between the two characters. She wanted to give the sensation of a movement in the work, like we're watching a scene unfold.
The work was actually created as a continuation of one of the works in her last exhibition titled “The girl that can’t be loved”. It shows two people having dinner at a table, and the interaction between them seems a bit off. Oliver imagines they are celebrating a special day which is contradicted by the exchange they are having together while celebrating. “Our day” further emphasises the meaning of this by showing the characters in another off interaction.
What do you think is going on between the two people in the work? 🧐
