The release of ‘Painting hearts and Ab-Exers on my lips’ with Gina Beavers is fast approaching so we asked the artist what inspired this edition and her practice at large.
The edition is based on a painting Beavers did in 2020, where she painted Abstract Expressionist paintings by Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Ellsworth Kelly on her lips. The inspiration for this was as she states “definitely costume make-up tutorials online and fan art, specifically modes that include famous works of art”. It’s playing with the idea that Beavers is a fan of these artists, but also is a painter herself. So what does it mean for her to paint these important works on her lips, to take them from a high art form to the popular art form of make-up.
In her work, Beavers is interested in the idea that her lip paintings are trying to be beautiful in front of the viewer. “Trying for beauty, and potentially failing is much more interesting to me than the idea of something being beautiful.”
